Julie and Matt's Wedding | The Adolphus, Dallas, Texas

We have been looking forward to Julie and Matt's wedding. A little bit over a year ago, we met, we talked, we connected and Bam! the wedding was here. Their beautiful wedding and reception was held at The Adolphus in Dallas.

Julie getting her make up done.

Matt was having a great time, he just smiled all day long.

Checking to make sure before he sees his bride for the first time.

At the Ketubah signing.

Matt and his dad walking into the ceremony hand-in-hand.

Julie walked around Matt seven times. This is said to be symbolic of the bride's desire to protect her husband from harm.

Checking each other's rings during cocktail hour, so cute!

First dance.

Matt and Julie's dads after a prayer over the challah and wine before dinner.

I LOVE this shot! They were just slow dancing. Sweet moment!

Julie left Matt a message on tape.

Photography is just amazing! When I see shot like this, I wonder to myself 'why did he cry?'. I just know that when he sees the photograph, it will bring back the memory and he would know immediately what had been said... it's just powerful.

Last but not least, Matt was so cute. He got up on stage and sang to Julie. Everyone was having a wonderful time.

Thank so much guys! Thanks for having us there!!!

Our first Halloween shoot!

I was so excited when I knew we will get to photograph Win, Blakely and their parent's Halloween portraits. I am crazy about twins (who wouldn't, right?! ;P) and these kids are just the cutest. They are just so good at being kids, being natural, and just doing their thing. On top of that, they were dressed up.

We had a great time shooting, here are a few of our favs:

I am already looking forward to next Halloween ^_-

Doug's looks back

We normally choose our own favorites or images that we feel give a sense of the story of a wedding day when we do a blog post. But this is a new experiment for us. Since Doug is a photographer and keeps his own photography blog for his work, and we love that his personality comes out in his writing. So... we asked him and Brenda to take a look at their wedding day images and come up with a group of favorites, and to tell us why they loved those particular photos.

We are truly grateful that they took the time to do this for our blog, as we know it is a time consuming project. The following text is all Doug and gives us a new appreciation for what our images mean to the couples who trust us to be there to capture a wedding day and the moments within.

Once again, thank you so much guys! Here we go...

FAVORITES FROM DOUG AND BRENDA'S WEDDING.
By Doug Phillips

Before I ever met my wife, I knew that I wanted Scott & Tem to photograph my wedding. They are that good. They are that sincere. They are all you could ever want in a photographer.

Several years ago when I was in college, I stumbled upon Scott & Tem’s work and was instantly hooked. As a photographer myself, their images spoke volumes to me. Anyone can perfect how a camera works, how to compose to image, or how to get a perfect exposure. Scott & Tem have those skills in spades, but they have something more…vision. They pick up on details that most would gloss over. Their creative eyes see things differently than most, and the way in which they document those fleeting moments and mementos is what makes them so special.

My wife and I had a very small wedding on Deep Creek Lake in Western Maryland. There were no horse drawn carriages, limos, live bands, or 4 tiered cakes. We wanted a simple wedding and a relaxing reception amongst our closest family and friends. We had Scott & Tem document our celebration for 2 days, and as you will see, there is nothing small or simple about their coverage. Scott & Tem captured raw emotion and beauty at its best. They were not photographers…everyone felt as though they were friends who happen to carry around big cameras. That comfort level is very evident in the photos that they have presented to us.

As a photographer, I couldn’t be more proud of Scott & Tem. They were flown across the country to a location that they had never laid their eyes on before, to spend a couple of days with a bunch of strangers, and had to dodge hellish downpours just seconds before the ceremony started…and they absolutely nailed it. As customers, we couldn’t be happier with Scott & Tem. We still tear up and laugh every time we look through our images. Scott & Tem do more than take pictures…they tell a story.

Image Comments:

One of my favorite images of my father and I from that weekend. I’m happy, go-lucky…while my dad is a bundle of nerves. Very telling of the wedding process!

I’m a big fan of photographing feet, and I love that Scott & Tem picked up on the dangling digits of our wedding rehearsal spectators.

This is one of the great, light, fun moments we had while giving gifts of appreciation to our parents. Didn’t even notice Scott or Tem there.

Rings shots do not have to be a cliché. The fusion of form, fern and fungus works perfectly here.

A very tender moment between father and daughter. These 2 traveled far for our wedding, and I’m glad they could be captured like this during some down time.

My father-in-law, Jake, and I share a laugh at the expense of our full bellies. Just a great moment between us.

I love this image because it expresses exactly what I was feeling at that second, joy. I was so happy to get some time alone with my bride-to-be in our rental boat.

This is one of our favorite images…my wife calls it our “Rockstar” picture. A little off-camera flash really makes this photo pop and different.

Riding into the sunset. Great use of a wide angle lens, at a low angle, with falling light.

We didn’t get to enjoy the bonfire with our friends, so this image really sets the mood of the occasion and location.

This photo is silly, and we love it. Only someone with an eye for unusual detail would see how this lamp “fits” on Brenda’s head.

What makes this photo different is that it’s a voyeuristic split-second of humor….almost as though you were just walking by and saw this great moment.

Great form and hints of emotion in this image.

Cute, candid, and awesome color.

A great example of depth and detail…a common theme in Scott & Tem’s images.

I really like the color and leading lines here. You can almost hear the girls saying “It’s COLD in here!”

The devil is in the details…and the ducks!

An awesome moment between Brenda and her Maid of Honor, Lisa. Tearing up before the ceremony. I love the B&W treatment of this image.

The moment of truth. Rain was pounding on the roof of the house and my brother was showing me the radar on his phone. I had to decide if the ceremony was to stay outside or go inside, and I wasn’t handling the pressure well.

This photo of Jake is fantastic. It bleeds personality and the flare is awesome and tasteful.

Probably my favorite image of my father, Wayne, on that day. A subtle moment that is full of pride and color.

There was only one image that my wife had to have, and this is it. She wanted a picture of me at the exact moment that I saw her for the first time in her wedding dress. The emotions of myself, and those of my brother and father, were captured perfectly.

A perfect shot of our ceremony under the canopy of the trees. Intimate & incredible.

This is the only thing I remember seeing during the ceremony…Brenda’s beaming face. My point of view was captured perfectly from a distance.

This image captures our exciting emotions exactly as they were.

The kiss! Not your typical “down the center of the aisle” kiss picture, and that’s what makes it perfect. The intimacy, vantage point and leading lines are great here.

Love & confetti. The wide angle used for this photo really shows more of the environment and setting.

This image alone should be reason enough to hire Scott & Tem. Perfect moment. Perfect capture. True Wedding Photojournalists.

Another one of Scott & Tem’s greatest clicks. I fight back tears every time I see our friend Jessica fighting back her own tears in this photo.

My father was teary-eyed the entire day, but this photo in particular really freezes a moment of overflowing emotion & joy.

One of the first moments alone as a husband and wife. We had to hurry to catch the elusive falling light under the trees. Quite a challenge for any photographer.

The depth of field (great lens choice) and color work wonders in this intimate image.

Our first dance. Love the B&W treatment. Love the backlighting. Love the private moment between us while among a crowd.

The side lighting raking across us really picks up details and emotion as we listen to a toast.

Proof that one photo alone can set the tone and capture the setting. Great choice of a wide angle lens here to show my uncle hoisting up his beer as the antler chandeliers burn through the background.

Father & Daughter as one big bundle of joy and dance. His daughter may be married now, but Jake hasn’t lost his little girl.

Another fun dance shot. The colors and shadows really work well together in this photo.

Like so many other images by Scott & Tem, this one is candid and full of color. This one in particular, is also full of laughs between my mother and I.

Great shot of the evening’s environment, while my Best Man and best girl share a dance. Awesome backlighting .

Last dance of the big night. One slow dance between myself and my new mother-in-law, Vivian. Really like the lighting and B&W treatment of this playful moment between us.

Ok, one more image ^_- We just wanted to add this one, as I noticed that is has the both of us in it, and we're having a good time while working. We truly enjoyed being there for Brenda and Doug and this image kind of sums it up. ^_^

Sini + Rengith’s wedding / The First United Methodist, Coppell, Texas

Sini and Rengith's wedding was held in Coppell, with a reception following at the Hilton Garden Inn in Lewisville. They had about 600 guests, and man...it was fun. The ceremony was an Indian Orthodox ceremony, and was very cool! There were so many unique nuances and the officiants actually fought for us to be as close to the action as possible to capture those important moments.

Here are some of our favorites from the awesome day:

Sini and Rengith provided this booklet with great detailed information on their wedding ceremony which I thought it was very interesting. So here goes:
The order of the service according to the Indian Orthodox Church is a blend of rich biblical traditions and teachings, practices of the Early Church in Palestine and Syria and customs of South India. It is rich in symbolism. Christ is symbolized as the divine Bridegroom whose Bride is the Church. This is fitting model of mutual commitment and total faithfulness that is commended to the couple. The prayers emphasized that marriage is a Sacrament and the family, a divinely blessed institution.

The bride stands on the right side of the bridegroom during the ceremony, indicating that she is given the highest honor, which is to be followed in practical life too.
The marriage service is divided into two parts, formerly held separately but now celebrated in immediate succession. The preliminary part is the “Office of Betrothal” (blessing of the ring) and the second part is the “Office of Crowning” (blessing of the crown) which constitutes the sacrament proper.

An overall shot of the sanctuary.

A toast in the limo, on the way to the reception.

A special choreographed dance for Sini and Rengith.

Ali + Zach's wedding / The Ritz Carlton, Dallas, Texas

They are so cute together!!! I just can't help but smile when I look at Ali + Zach's wedding images ^_^ hehehe. She is so sweet and he is just cool.

We had a great time shooting their wedding which took place at The Ritz Carlton in Downtown Dallas. Let's get right to some of our favs.

Marta, Jon and Laszlo

It's been a couple of years since we last saw Marta and Jon... in fact Laszlo was still inside his mama's tummy when we did Marta's maternity portraits. This time, Laszlo is full of energy and fun to watch while he played with his sandbox and the family cat. We were also blessed to see Marta and Jon again along with Laszlo's little brother or sister (they're waiting to find out) and get some family photos of all four of them together!

Here are some of our favorites from the session.

The cat was startled by my shutter and took off after this image. ^_^

"They fight!" Laszlo said as he played with his shark and dolphin.

The cat was so good and patient. Scott said "Wow, he's so tolerant." and Laszlo picked up immediately and kept saying "tolerant...tolerant... tolerant" ^_^ Very cute!

Laszlo showing us where the baby is.

A sweet moment! I love when husband and wife look at each other with a hint of a smile and their eyes tell their stories you know?! Just love it!

Using mom as the train tracks.

We can't wait to meet the new little one and hopefully get together again soon for more photos. ^_^

Sini and Rengith's engagement session in Deep Ellum

We recently photographed Sini and Rengith's engagement portraits in Deep Ellum. Sini was a bridesmaid at Hena and Sonu's wedding last year. We are so happy we are gonna get to capture her and Rengith's wedding which is coming up in two weeks. We can't wait!

Here are a few of our favs from the session.

Jackie and Lynn's family

I LOVE shooting family portrait sessions!!! I can't get enough of it, it's just so much fun! These little kids with their personalities and the moment they share with their parents. They are fascinating, they just do whatever they want to do. I hope they will enjoy these when they grow up.

Jackie and Joey
; our awesome couple from Milwaukee planned a visit to Texas recently. Not only we get to meet Connor; their brand new cutie baby boy we get to shoot Jackie's sister; Lynn's family too.

Lynn and her son Thien.

Joey and Connor, a mini version of himself.

Hanh a.k.a. "baby girl" as everyone calls her. Just standing there starring at us looking adorable.

Jackie trying to entertain Connor.

Bao and his little baby girl.

Double hand holdings.

Bao and Lynn are so cute together. They just make each other laugh and smile ^_^ They said the last time they had their picture taken for just the two of them was at their wedding.

Same here, just mommy and daddy on this one.

Annaly's Soukhouane/Day Thang

It was our joy and pleasure to be able to be there to capture Annaly as she celebrated her first Lao ritual Soukhouane and Vietnamese Day Thang ceremonies.

A little more information on the ceremony just in case anyone curious about it. The ceremony is a ritual used to well-wish for many events: marriage, birth, travel, etc... A number of people sit around the Phakhouan (the spirit tray), which is decorated with flowers, folded bananas leaves and branches with white cotton strings hanging down; bananas, boiled eggs, pastries, liquors and money are placed surrounding the base of the PhaKhouan as offering to the spirits in attendance. The ceremony will not happen if there is no MorPhorn (Wish priest). Usually an elder who spent some times as a Monk - presides over the ritual. He lights the candles which have been placed on top of Phakhouan. He then gives prayers while all attendance hold their hands in a prayer-like, palm-together pose. If there are too many participants for everyone to reach the base of the PhaKwan, it's permissible to touch the elbow of some who can reach it, thus forming a human chain. Later everyone takes a white string and ties around each wrist of the honored guests while wishpering a short, well-wishing recitation. Foods and drinks are served after the ceremony and following with a party.

She is so good, no crying no fussing, she just slept through it.

The elder tied 'Sai Sin' around Lyly's wrist. The sacred white cord called sai sin is meant to ward off ghosts and evil spirits.

And now on Annaly's wrist.

I love this moment! Annaly is up and active while Julian tied 'sai sin' on her tiny wrist. It's like she knows what he is saying. If I recall correctly he said "when you grow up don't forget mommy and daddy, ok!?" It was real sweet!

Kids being kids, doing their thing ;)

No caption needed I don't think hehe.

Almost everyone held Annaly and she didn't mind one bit. What a sweet baby!!!

Lyly and Julian, thanks again for calling and wanting us to be a part in welcoming little Annaly into your families. We are truly honored!

WPJA Q2 2009 wedding photography contest

So... WPJA announced results of the last Q2 WPJA contest recently and we are happy to have 3 of our images place among all the inspiring imagery. Whoo hoo!

A great article on "Wedding Photography"

Two days ago Scott and I had a meeting with our prospective bride and groom and they came up with a few excellent questions. One of them was about our gear; do we have back up, what kind of equipment we have and etc?! I couldn't help but have to tell story about how Scott fell into the decorated chest-deep pool at Misti and Rob's wedding and that we have plenty of back up equipment (here is the blog post for more detailed info. on the dunk, lessons learned and our gear) and proceeded to show and tell about our imagery from that wedding and how we didn't miss a beat, which even our couple said themselves.

Well, I want to share this interesting article from Seattle Bride by Cody Ellerd. Cody is a professional travel writer who went to shoot a wedding for Seattle Bride and here is the article. It's definitely eye opening to read another perspective of what we feel is our position being seen from the other side of the fence... and understood. Very illuminating! ^_^

Let me not spoil it!

The Castellanos Family

Check out some of our favorites from Leticia, Rodrigo, and little Sebastien's family session at the Dallas Arboretum. We were joined by Rodrigo's parents who helped us play with Sebastien and even get to pose a little for some photos of just them as well.

Thanks guys! We had fun!

Valerie and Patrick: Save the date!

Valerie and Patrick are getting married next year! I can't tell you where and when but we know it is going to be a great event at an exotic location ;p

They want to send out their save the date cards to families and friends soon so we went out and here are some of our favs from the shoot.

Daniel's Bar Mitzvah

Warnings: there will be a lot of images in this post ;p I can't help it. There were tons of great moments and details and we had such a good time photographing Daniel Sanders'Bar Mitzvah. The Ceremony was held at The Ritz Carlton in Dallas. We also would like to give some props to Mary-Frances Hurt and Karen Rector from DFW Events, what a wonderful job you ladies did. Check out some of our favs.

Cocktails for a Cause

I am honored to a part of "Cocktails for a Cause" fundraiser, a charity fundraiser benefiting ATG Against The Grain Productions' community outreach initiatives and orphanages in Vietnam. Their theme for this event is showcasing the work of up and coming Asian American photographers. Each of us (photographers) will auction off one special 'Hope" themed print for charity, so don't miss out the opportunity to help raise money for a worthy cause!

Date: Friday, September 25, 2009
Time: 9:30pm - 11:30pm
Location: Dallas Center for Architecture

Also check out the Dallas premiere of Operation Babylift: The Lost Children of Vietnam! An award-winning documentary screening with filmAsiafest at 7 pm at the Dallas Museum of Art. A Q&A with the producing team will follow, with several of the cast in attendance.

What it's about:
"Operation Babylift" was a $2 million US initiative that airlifted over 2,500 Vietnamese orphans out of a war-torn country to protect them from the impending threat of the Communist Regime. Coined by some as "one of the most humanitarian efforts in history," it was also plagued by lawsuits and political turmoil. Even with the best intentions, these adoptees grew up facing a unique set of challenges in America, including prejudice overshadowed by a controversial war and cultural identity crisis. Now, almost thirty five years later, this documentary takes a candid look at a significant yet untold event as seen through the eyes of the volunteers, parents, and organizations directly involved, as well as uncovers the "lost" stories of the the adoptees and who they have become as adults.

Jill and Thien's Wedding

We both are super excited to have beeen there to capture all the moments for Jill and Thien. They tied the knot recently at The Mary Immaculate Church in Farmers Branch. On top of that, we got to see all our former wonderful brides and grooms again (Lanie + Alan, Stacy + Mike, Yinette + Tri and Amy + Kevin - shout out to our peeps woot woot!!!).

Here are some of our favs. Start off with morning preparations at Jill's parents house.

Yep, get them all done at the same time.

Siblings - Sarah and Chris

Our first sister and brother shoot. Scott is the only child and I have 2 older sisters so we were like 'what do adult brothers and sisters do for fun?! Hmm...m'. It definitely was a challenge for us but we had a great time.

Here are a few of our favs from the session.

This nice little furry fella is Murphy. He is filled with energy.

Baby Ryan

I am thrilled for a chance to capture this special memory for Kevin and Nikki who just became first time parents. Scott and I are very excited for them both.

Baby Ryan weighed 7 pounds 6 ounces when he was born. I photographed him when he was 6 days old. He won't be this little for long so it is going to be great to have these to look back on.

Beth and Jim's Wedding

Beth and Jim said 'I do' recently at The Memorial Drive Presbyerian Church in Houston, Texas. We had been looking forward to the wedding cause we knew it was going to be so much fun. If you ever meet Beth (we'd never Jim until the wedding day), you will know why I say that. ^_- Of course we were not disappointed. We had such a wonderful time, as did all of their friends and family! There are so many favs from the weddings, I am having a hard time narrowing them down.

All the girls getting ready in Sarah's room at The Magnolia.

Holy smokes! ;p Pun intended.

Maggie from Maggie and Kyle/Emily's sister ^_- also was there doing such a great job on hair and makeup as usual. Go Maggie!

At the church as the groomsmen were getting ready.

A card from the future mrs. to Jim.

This image makes me laugh. I love seeing double.

Jim's reaction to his groomsmen's stories while they are circling around him reminding him how they met, their impressions of Beth, and all sorts of wonderful tales.

I love dad and daughter moments, just the look on his face... awww.

OK, one more.

On the bus with the fun bridal party on the way to The Crystal Ballroom at the Rice for the reception.

First dance.

Jim's brother's toast got a pretty good reaction from Beth and Jim.

Remember that scene from Top Gun?! Yep! They did it!!!

I think Sarah said 'I am next' as she caught the bouquet. We can hardly wait.

Emily + Marcus' Wedding

Scott and I feel very honored when we were asked by Emily and Marcus to shoot their wedding. I don't know how often it happens but every time we have sibling(s) of the bride or groom who want us to shoot their weddings we feel so privileged.

As some of you may know, we had shot Maggie and Kyle's wedding (Emily's sister) last year and *yay* for us Emily and Marcus liked our style and how we approached the weddings so got to shoot theirs too. Thanks guys for making us a part of your big day!

Emily and Marcus got married at All Saints Catholic Church, with the reception at the Bent Tree Country Club. Here goes:

As the girls are getting ready, Whitney picks up the veil and tries it on just because she wants to. So cute and funny at the same time.

A few touch ups.

Marcus' mom pops in to give him a hug.

Sneak peek of the Sanctuary.

Kim gets emotional seeing Emily in her wedding dress.

All the cutie pies at the wedding.

ok... one more ;p they are just so cute.

Walking out for the first time as a married couple.

I wasn't too sure why they didn't recess but I kept shooting...

Whew... they thought they are done.

Reaction from Emily's parents once we all figured it out what had happened and they left before the ceremony was over. (Hey guys...we thought it was over too)

As the rest of the ceremony concludes.

Ok this one is the real last one.

Wonderful Jordan and Megan from jordanpayneevents.com did a superb job as usual.

First dance.

I just love Maggie's toast about how shy Emily and Marcus are. It was pretty funny actually as she said their families sometimes wondered what they did on their dates, and if they even talked to each other. She ended with a sentiment about how she can't wait until she and Emily have babies and and they can share those new moments together. So sweet!

It is that song... downtown do your thing... do your thing...

Let me give you the link to our favs from Emily and Marcus'wedding otherwise I will just keep going on and on. I love telling wedding stories and of course showing all the images along with it.

Amanda and Chris's wedding

We recently photographed Amanda and Chris's wedding at the Dallas Arboretum. It was a beautiful outdoor ceremony with a reception following at the Rosine Hall. Everything looked great and we all had a wonderful time.

Cynthia and Ben's Engagement Session

We shot Cynthia and Ben's Engagement Session around the Arlington Hall at Lee Park where Ben proposed and also where the wedding will be held at this coming November. The weather made us nervous all week but it worked out perfectly.

The bridge where Ben proposed.

I love your big brown eyes 0_0

We are totally looking forward to the wedding. We can tell from your dance moves we saw recently at Amanda and Chris's wedding that your wedding is going to be a blast!

Little Gage

A family shoot with Alissa and Gage. We are so excited to see Alissa again, she is the sister of our former bride (Jennifer). She can't be anymore laid back, and really just a cool person overall.

Alissa has a new addition to the family, Little Gage. He is a ball of energy. We can still hear his voice in our heads "mama, No, bubbles". It was sort of funny, as we were worried we will tire him out but he just kept going and going...

I have so many favs from the shoot, here are some some of them.

They were making monkey noises.

At the park nearby Alissa's house.

Playing with Mama and Aunt Jen.

Back in their own backyard.

Ah..h bubbles...s.

Love his pose and cheese puff. He is quite natural.

Not sure what Scott would say about this but I want to shoot more of a 'Day In The Life'. It was so much FUN!!! I truly enjoy photographing kids interacting with their parents, having a good time doing their thing and just being kids.

Jill and Thien's Portrait Session

Here are some shots from Jill and Thien portrait session. It was sort of an overcast kinda day, even lighting and everything which turned out really nice. We are looking forward to the wedding (it's coming up so soon).

Posting for their friend Linda. We couldn't help but have to shoot over her shoulder.

Erin + Brett's Wedding

Recently Erin & Brett had their wedding and reception at Marie Gabrielle. Both Erin and Brett were so lively and fun to be around and work with.

Without further ado, here are a few of our favorite photographs.

Changing time for the little one as the flower girl looks on.

Lemon drops for the guys.

I promise it is not a random image. While I was shooting I heard the guys said 'that's weird!'. I turned around they were pointing up. Voila! One lone tree on top of a building. That is weird!

Beth Bridal Portrait

We just got back from Beth and Jim's wedding in Houston today. That means I can show a few images from Beth's bridal portrait.

Beth is such a fun bride, just simply wonderful person to be around and to work with. We both had a great time at the wedding and at the portrait session.

Sara + Dan's Wedding
